# Google Business Profile: service area for your trades business

If you travel to customers and do not receive them at your business address, hide that address on Google Business Profile and enter your actual service area. With an eligible showroom and work at customers' premises, you can show both. The list of places does not guarantee a ranking in Google Maps.

## Key points

- If you do not receive customers at your business address, it should not be displayed publicly on your Google Business Profile.

- Enter the places where your business actually works. Google allows up to 20 service areas; you do not have to use them all.

- Adding a place does not guarantee a ranking in searches there. Google considers other factors for local results.

## Do you receive customers at your business premises?

This question determines how you present your trades business on Google Business Profile. An office where you prepare quotes is not automatically a place for customer visits.

How your business works Suitable profile setup
Your team travels to customers; your office or home has no customer reception Enter a service area and hide the address publicly
Customers visit your showroom and you also work at their premises Address and service area, provided the location meets Google’s requirements
Customers only visit your workshop; you offer no work at their premises Address of the eligible location, no service area

If your team only travels to customers, use the **service area**. Your business address should then be hidden on the public profile. Google calls this a service-area business. It means there is no reception for visiting customers, not that the business has no real address.

If, however, you have a real showroom where you receive customers and also work on building sites, you may have a **hybrid business**. In that case, an address and service area can both be used. For the displayed address, Google requires, among other things, permanent signage; staff must be able to receive customers there during the stated business hours. Details are in [Google’s guidelines for business addresses](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177?hl=en).

Renting a mailing address does not make it a branch. If you are unsure whether your location meets the requirements, have the actual situation checked before making a change.

## How do you hide the address on your Google profile?

If customers do not visit your business premises, [Google’s business address help](https://support.google.com/business/answer/2853879?hl=en) describes these steps:

- Open your Business Profile with the account that manages it and select **Edit profile → Location**.

- Edit **Business location** and turn off **Show business address to customers**.

- Save, then check your service area and the public view in Search and Maps.

A real business address is still required for verification with Google. Hiding it does not mean entering a fictional location. It does not remove the address from other websites either. Do not delete the entire profile to do this.

## An example from bathroom renovation

Imagine a business with an office in Mödling that renovates bathrooms in Mödling and southern Vienna. Consultations and measurements take place at customers’ premises. The office has no reception for customers.

This fictional business would not display its office address publicly on the profile and would enter the areas it actually serves. Vienna only belongs there if the team also accepts and carries out jobs there. Occasional larger projects further away should be taken into account when selecting and describing the area.

If the same business later opens a showroom with a permanent customer reception, its profile needs to be reviewed. That is a change to the business model. Wanting more enquiries from Vienna alone does not justify an additional Vienna location.

To coordinate with your agency, start with the places where you actually work and whether customers can visit you. The agency can use this to determine suitable profile details and check the settings.

## How to define a realistic service area

Google allows cities, postcodes and other supported regions. You cannot set a freely drawn radius in kilometres as your service area. Your selection should show as accurately as possible where your business offers its services.

Start with the jobs you actually accept: where do you carry out the services you offer, and where would you decline an enquiry because of the travel involved? If small repairs and larger renovations have different service areas, explain that limitation on your website as well. The list of places alone does not communicate these differences.

According to [Google’s service-area help](https://support.google.com/business/answer/9157481?hl=en), these rules apply:

- You can select a maximum of 20 service areas. Fewer are enough if they describe your work accurately.

- The boundary of the overall area should be no more than approximately two hours’ drive from the business location. In its business guidelines, Google also mentions cases where larger areas may be appropriate. This does not establish a rigid kilometre limit for every business.

- If you do not receive customers at your business address, the service area is displayed and the address is hidden. For an eligible hybrid business, both may appear.

If you manage the profile yourself, the current route is **Edit profile → Location → Edit service area**. Select the appropriate suggestions, remove places you no longer serve and save the change. If an agency manages your profile, it can do this for you.

Check the public view afterwards. Google notes that approved changes can take up to 48 hours to appear on the profile. This period starts after approval; it is not a promise that every submitted change will be approved within two days.

## Will you be found in every place you enter?

The service area tells customers where you work. It does not imply a particular ranking in the cities entered.

Google lists the main factors for [local search results](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7091?hl=en) as the business’s relevance to the search, distance and prominence or popularity. Complete, correct details help Google understand your offer. Selecting an additional place does not replace these requirements.

If you are rarely found in an area, the review should therefore go beyond the list of places. Do the business category and the services described fit? Is the profile verified and up to date? Does the linked website explain the service people are searching for clearly? The person managing it should use specific search queries to identify the gap.

For planning your workload, enquiries for services and places your business can cover are what count. Lots of profile views from an unsuitable area do little to help.

For incoming enquiries, record the service and job location, and whether they could become suitable jobs. This helps distinguish between an unclear description of your area and a possible visibility issue. The guide to [measuring SEO success](https://brandhoop.at/en/ratgeber/seo-erfolg-messen/) explains how to interpret these results.

## Your profile and website should describe the same work

Compare the profile with your service page: do they offer the same services? Are the phone number and website link correct? Does the website clearly explain which places your team serves and how customers can get in touch?

In the Mödling example, the service page could explain that consultations and measurements take place at the customer’s premises and which areas the team visits. A completed project from the region can illustrate the offer, provided it is shown with the necessary permissions. The business does not need to claim a branch at the project location to do this.

Adding a service area does not require a separate website page for every place either. The guide to [local landing pages](https://brandhoop.at/en/ratgeber/lokale-landingpages/) explains when an additional page is useful.

## What should you give your agency to review?

If you do not want to maintain these details yourself, the agency can review your profile and website together. It mainly needs:

- links to your existing profile and website;

- whether and when customers can visit you at your premises;

- the places and services you actually cover, including travel limitations;

- examples of suitable and unsuitable enquiries, without unnecessary customer data.

You confirm the business facts. The agency documents the proposed changes and checks the public view after approval. You do not need to bring a finished keyword list or technical analysis to the first conversation.

At BrandHoop, you can discuss how [SEO can make your business’s services easier to find](https://brandhoop.at/en/leistungen/seo/). Your current website, existing profile and actual service area are enough to narrow down the next useful steps.

## Conclusion

Set your address and service area to reflect how your business actually works. Clarify first whether you receive customers, then which places you serve. If suitable enquiries are still missing despite correct details, it is worth reviewing the profile and website together.

## Frequently asked questions

Can I use a Google profile if my office is at home?

A trades business that visits customers at their premises can generally use a Business Profile. If you do not receive customers at home, the address should not appear publicly there. The information you give Google must still describe the actual business. Hiding an address on the profile does not automatically remove it from other websites.

Do I have to enter all 20 service areas?

No. 20 is the upper limit, not a target. Choose the supported cities, postcodes or regions that describe your actual service area as accurately as possible.

Can I create a separate profile for every city?

A single mobile business does not get an additional profile for every place it works. Separate profiles may be allowed for multiple real locations, each with its own staff and service area. These locations must comply with Google's guidelines.

### Local landing pages: do you need a page for every town?

Not every place in your service area needs its own page. A local landing page makes sense when it answers specific customer questions in that area that your existing website does not yet explain well enough.
