# Measuring SEO success: which metrics count?

You measure SEO success through relevant search visits and the enquiries they produce. Search Console, web analytics and your office record different parts of this journey. Together, the data helps you choose the next piece of website work.

## Key points

- Evaluate important service pages and relevant keywords separately. Total website visitors can hide a different development.

- A phone-number click is a measured action. Your business adds whether it led to a conversation and a suitable enquiry.

- Compare the same data sources, filters and measurement definitions. Show absolute numbers alongside percentages.

- Evaluate Google Search visits to your website and your Business Profile separately. Profile actions can also come from Google Ads.

## Which SEO metrics does your business need?

Start with the business goal. A bathroom business, for example, wants to win complete renovations within its own service area. A general guide with many visitors can be helpful; its reach does not yet show whether the bathroom renovation page reaches suitable customers.

KPIs are key performance indicators. To assess search engine optimisation, start with a small selection that fits your SEO goals. Additional figures help when a specific question remains open.

Metric and data source What it tells you Limitation
Impressions and clicks from Google Search Console Visibility and search visits for important pages Does not count suitable enquiries or jobs
Position and click-through rate from Search Console Changes for the search queries you selected Rankings vary between searches; keep comparison filters consistent
Organic sessions from web analytics Recorded visits from unpaid search A session is not a search click; measurement gaps remain possible
Contact actions from tested tracking For example, form submissions or phone-number clicks An action does not confirm a suitable contact
Google Business Profile interactions Profile views, website clicks and call-button clicks on Google Search and Maps Separate data source; can include organic and paid interactions
Enquiries, quotes and jobs from the office Fit with the offer and the later result Source is not reliably known for every contact

The agency sets up the agreed measurement and explains the data. Your team adds information about the contacts. Your existing office process may be sufficient for this.

## Example: more search clicks, the same number of suitable enquiries

The following example is fictional and does not show BrandHoop client results. A bathroom business compares two periods of equal length with unchanged measurement:

Observation Period A Period B
Google search clicks to the entire website 120 180
Search clicks to the bathroom renovation service page 30 32
Recorded phone-number clicks from organic sessions 9 12
All enquiries actually received 10 11
Of these, suitable for the service and service area 3 3

The whole website receives more search clicks. The important service page gains little, and the number of suitable enquiries stays the same. The additional phone-number clicks do not confirm additional conversations either.

In the example, most of the new clicks come from a general guide. Many real contacts concern unwanted minor repairs; their source is partly unknown. The SEO provider therefore checks search queries and the offer on the bathroom renovation page. The business confirms which services and places fit.

After the revision, search data and contact quality are reviewed again. The report records the affected page, planned change, person responsible and next review date.

## How to review SEO success each month

Start by defining the important service pages, the jobs you want and the places you serve. Save an initial report as your baseline and record when reliable measurement began. Your business needs its own access to the accounts used.

- Open the Search results performance report in Search Console. For example, compare two complete periods of 28 days each, leaving out preliminary days. Keep the search type, country and device filters consistent. A country filter for Austria helps focus on your Austrian market, but does not establish a match with your service area.

- Under “Pages”, select an important service page and review its queries. Separate business-name searches from service searches. Record clicks, impressions and CTR with the exact URL and filters.

- In web analytics, check landing pages and the agreed contact actions. To compare with Google Search clicks, filter GA4 to session source “google” and session medium “organic”. The “Organic Search” channel alone can include other search engines. Google explains [how to use Search Console and Analytics together](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/monitor-debug/google-analytics-search-console?hl=en).

- Add office records for each project: date, service, location, known source and status, such as suitable, quote, job won or declined. Leave unknown sources unassigned. Do not count follow-up questions about the same project again.

- Choose a justified next task. Record the expected change, person responsible and review date. If the expected effect does not appear, revisit the assumption and measurement.

## What does Google Search data show?

[Google Search Console describes its metrics and filters](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/7576553?hl=en) for queries, pages, countries and devices. Use the same settings when comparing periods.

### Impressions and clicks

Impressions show how often your website appears in the search results being considered. Clicks record how often a result is clicked. Check important service pages alongside the totals.

No impressions does not prove that a page is not indexed. Check the specific address with [URL Inspection in Search Console](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/9012289?hl=en) to investigate that question.

If impressions rise while clicks stay the same, the page may, for example, be appearing for additional keywords in lower positions. Its search result may also fail to match expectations. The numbers narrow down the question; the cause needs investigating.

### Keyword rankings and click-through rate

A ranking is only helpful for a suitable keyword. A search for a service you do not offer or a distant location means something different for your business.

Average position is a mean, not a fixed ranking for every user. If many new searches in lower positions are added, the average may get worse even though the website appears more often. Review relevant queries and pages separately to see which searches changed.

Click-through rate (CTR) is the share of impressions that result in clicks. 30 clicks from 1,000 impressions gives 3 percent. Compare similar queries, pages and devices. A blanket target rate for all websites does little to help the assessment.

For a low CTR, the agency checks positions, queries and the search result displayed. An unsuitable page title or unclear description may need revising. CTR alone does not explain the cause.

### Consider business names and search engines separately

Brand keywords contain your business name or a variation of it. Someone who specifically searches for your business after a recommendation already knows it. “Bathroom renovation Vienna” initially shows interest in a service. The two groups answer different questions about customer acquisition.

This split is incomplete: Google omits anonymised queries from the query table. When you apply a query filter, they are also excluded from the filtered figures. The [comparison of branded and non-branded searches](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/10268906?hl=en) is therefore approximate; the parts need not add up to the unfiltered total.

Google and Bing also need separate data sources. Paid ads, social media and referrals from other websites should be distinguishable from organic search visits. Otherwise, it is easy to attribute overall visitor growth incorrectly.

### Put visibility in AI answers in context

The [Search Console generative AI report](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/16984139?hl=en) shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by dimensions such as page, country and device. It does not provide separate clicks or enquiries for these features. Those impressions are already included in the overall performance data and must not be added again. If the report is missing, there may be too few impressions. A single manual search in an AI service does not establish lasting visibility.

## What does Google Business Profile measure?

A customer can call directly from your profile without visiting the website. These contacts therefore belong in the review even when no web analytics session is recorded.

The profile’s “Performance” section includes call-button and website clicks. According to [Google’s profile performance guidance](https://support.google.com/business/answer/9918094?hl=en), “Calls” counts clicks on the call button; the data can include organic results and Google Ads. Do not add profile clicks and website actions together as a count of unique enquiries. For profile addresses and service areas, see [Google Business Profile for trades businesses](https://brandhoop.at/en/ratgeber/google-unternehmensprofil-handwerker/).

## How do visits, conversions and jobs connect?

Organic traffic means visits from unpaid search results. Web analytics records these visits and actions on the website where measurement is working. Search Console records activity in Google Search. Search clicks and measured sessions therefore do not have to match.

For unusual jumps, the SEO provider first checks the data source, filters and measurement. Newly installed tracking can record more visits without more people actually coming to the website. Missing consent, blocked tags and different time zones can explain differences between web analytics and Search Console. A missing measurement is not a confirmed zero.

### Goal actions and suitable enquiries

In an SEO report, “conversion” often means an agreed goal action, such as a form submission or phone-number click. Google Analytics calls important marked events [key events](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/13965727?hl=en); Google Ads conversions are configured separately. Ask which definition the report uses.

The agency tests the entire contact journey: a successful form submission is recorded exactly once, while rejected input is not counted as a successful enquiry. A click on “Send” is not enough evidence. For phone contact, distinguish a number click from a conversation that actually took place.

Your office adds whether contact took place, whether it matched the service and region, and whether a quote or job followed. Several messages about the same project count as one enquiry.

### Calculate the conversion rate clearly

For a session-based rate, divide sessions containing the agreed goal action by all sessions considered and multiply by 100. Several actions in the same session count here as one session with a goal action.

**Rate = sessions with the goal action ÷ sessions considered × 100**

A fictional example: out of 200 recorded organic sessions, eight contain a successful form submission. The rate is 4 percent. Whether these became eight suitable enquiries needs to be checked separately. A rate for phone-number clicks measures something different from a rate for won jobs.

In GA4, select the specific key event for this question. The [session rate for all key events](https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/reporting/data/v1/api-schema#metrics) can also include other marked actions. Do not divide form events from GA4 by Search Console clicks: the numerator and denominator would come from different measurements.

### Put revenue and SEO ROI in context

Several contacts may occur between a website visit, site visit and order. A later phone call or recommendation means the source is not always clear. Search data does not link every keyword to a particular enquiry.

If a report states an SEO ROI, ask for the period, attributed results and costs included to be explained. Revenue alone does not describe profit. Where attribution is incomplete, that uncertainty must remain visible.

## Which additional figures help with problems?

Use additional SEO metrics to investigate a specific problem.

### Usability, loading time and bounce rate

Slow service pages or a difficult form need to be checked along the actual contact journey. Core Web Vitals describe loading performance, responsiveness and visual stability. Google considers these metrics but explains that [good scores do not guarantee a top ranking](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/page-experience?hl=en).

Bounce rate depends on the measurement definition. In [Google Analytics 4](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/12195621?hl=en), it is the percentage of sessions that were not engaged sessions. An unusual figure can prompt a review. Someone who only wants a phone number, however, has a different task from someone reading about a renovation process.

A longer engagement time can also mean interest or difficulty finding information. If a report mentions “time on site”, ask for the precise definition: which time interval is recorded, and does the figure refer to a page or a session? Analytics tools such as Google Analytics provide different metrics. Only with this explanation can the figure be compared across reports.

### SEO analysis: backlinks and tool scores

Backlinks are links from other websites. An analysis considers the source, context and target page. Several links from the same navigation need to be assessed differently from recommendations by several relevant businesses. The number of referring domains therefore adds context to the raw link count.

A visibility index summarises positions for the keywords selected by the tool. Check whether your local market is represented. Google explains the [limitations of SEO tools](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/third-party-seo?hl=en): their scores are not internal Google ranking data.

Figures such as domain authority describe a particular tool’s assessment. Ask how the tool defines the score and what website work it helps you choose. A higher score alone does not confirm an additional job.

If an important page is missing from search entirely, start by checking accessibility and indexing. [Why can’t Google find my website?](https://brandhoop.at/en/ratgeber/google-findet-website-nicht/) can help.

## How often should you compare SEO KPIs?

A regular report can bring together completed work and current observations. With few enquiries, the assessment also needs longer periods so that individual contacts do not look like a stable trend.

Always show absolute numbers alongside percentages. An increase from one to two suitable enquiries is 100 percent, but is based on just one additional contact. It does not yet establish a reliable growth rate.

Compare periods of equal length that are as similar as possible. Previous-year data can help put seasonal differences in context. Business holidays, changed services, additional advertising and tracking changes belong in the notes.

Also check Google’s [known data issues](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/6211453?hl=en) when trends break. Google documents inaccurate impressions and affected CTR and position metrics from 13 May 2025 to 27 April 2026; clicks were unaffected. A year-on-year comparison spanning that period needs this note and must not be attributed solely to your SEO work.

For new pages, the SEO provider first checks publication, availability and accessibility to search engines. Relevant impressions, clicks and contacts follow. This does not establish a fixed deadline for the first job.

## What should your next SEO report answer?

- Which work was implemented on which pages, and when was it published?

- What changed in relevant searches, organic visits and the agreed goal actions?

- Which sources, filters and comparison periods were used?

- Which real contacts suit the business, and where is a reliable source missing?

- What next step follows, who will handle it and when will it be reviewed again?

If relevant search clicks increase without identifiable enquiries, possible causes include missing information, a broken contact method or measurement gaps. The SEO provider should investigate these causes before more articles are commissioned.

If you are assessing a provider, use our [criteria for choosing an SEO agency](https://brandhoop.at/en/ratgeber/seo-agentur-auswaehlen/) alongside the report. It should help you understand which next task you are approving.

BrandHoop can review your existing SEO report alongside your website. As part of our [SEO management](https://brandhoop.at/en/leistungen/seo/), we handle the agreed measurement, evaluation and improvements. We clarify the work and its cost before you commission it.

## Conclusion

A useful SEO report connects completed work, relevant search data and feedback on real contacts. It should lead to a specific next task, a person responsible and a review date.

## Frequently asked questions

Is a better Google ranking enough to demonstrate SEO success?

A better ranking for a relevant keyword is progress. For a business assessment, you also need relevant search visits and suitable enquiries. Always check the service and service area.

Do I have to set up SEO reporting myself?

No. You can commission the setup, checking and explanation of measurement. Your business adds which enquiries are suitable and what happened to them. If reliable measurement is missing, that gap needs to be addressed first.

Does a higher visibility index prove success?

It shows a change within the keywords selected by the tool. For a local business, you need to check whether those keywords represent your market. The index alone does not prove there were additional suitable enquiries.

Can I measure SEO success with free tools?

You can use the free Search Console for Google Search data. Add appropriately configured web analytics where needed, along with your records of real enquiries. A paid ranking tool is not needed to get started; setting up measurement can still involve work and costs.
